The media room is buzzing in the Scotiabank Center with only one day remaining before Northern Pro Wrestling holds it’s “Heart of Halifax” event featuring several big matchups and culminating with the Finals of the fourth annual Cruiserweight Cup.
Next up to face the scrum are Dusty Griffith, scheduled to face off with three hungry fighters and Cruiserweight Cup Semi-Finalist Jay Stevens, who have also been joined by teammate Nicole Anderson. The room comes alive as the three take their seats to address the collected media as the questions begin.
“Dusty, down in front. The impact of your arrival in Northern Pro Wrestling has already sent waves through the wrestling world. Tomorrow night you are going to face three other competitors in the Championship Hierarchy. Where do you think a win puts you in that list of contenders?”
Sitting back, Dusty contemplates the question for a moment before leaning forward towards the mic.
Griffith: Well, they’ve been hyping this thing up as some sorta fast track for the winner. Right? So, I’d think a win puts me at or near the front of the line. Whether that’s for Jesse Jamster’s Double Crown or Ronnie Long’s Openweight Title…
Anderson: Or both!
Dusty glances at Kid Dynamite with a smirk ever so slightly cracking his usual stone expression.
Griffith: …or both. Either whichaway makes no difference to me. All Gus needs to do is line ‘em up and I’ll do my best to knock ‘em down.
Dusty begins to lean back.
“Okay, but what about Chris Card and the World Heavyweight Championship?”
Dusty’s eyes narrow as he stares in the direction of the follow up question. He snorts and thumbs his nose before drawing a breath.
Griffith: One thing at a time, brother. There’s things that need doing here in Northern Pro, like Jamester and Long and, hell, who knows, me and the kid could do something, too.
Dusty lets a grin curl up for a moment as he sits back as the media murmur about that insinuation before things move along.
“Jay, I’d like to turn to you and get your thoughts on the matches ahead of you. This is your third appearance in the Cruiserweight Cup and many have said the field this year could be the best yet. How do you feel your chances are with so many factors still unknown, like who your opponents will be?”
Stevens: The field is good and just like in previous years, I find myself at the top. I have proven time and again that I am the best wrestler in this division and the only accolade eluding me is the Cup itself. I started this tournament prepared to face any of the four men I may collide with, that fact hasn’t changed. I said it before, I’ll say it again, I am going to win.
“Assuming you are victorious tomorrow night, what’s next? Will you challenge Rob Garcia to take the Cruiserweight Championship back?”
Stevens: I also firmly believe in “one thing at a time” but there is no doubt in my mind I will win tomorrow night. All of the preparation is complete, the only thing left is to execute. I was prepared to let Garcia keep that belt, argue and bicker with Eddie Havok until the end of time, but this tournament has shown me he shouldn’t be allowed to remain champion. He has to go to bed knowing that the only thing keeping him as champion is whether or not he is the next thing in my sights. That’s not a good night’s sleep.
“This question is for Jay and Dusty. The two of you have known each other for a long time and Dusty, you even returned to Northern Pro for one night to settle the score with Bloodline at Jay’s side. Why have you now decided to align yourselves in a more permanent and public way?”
Griffith and Stevens both motion to each other, deferring to the other to field the question. Anderson uses the opening to chime in.
Anderson: Even though it wasn’t addressed to me, and it should have been since I’m on the team too, I’ll answer. Money and bitches.
Dusty glowers in her direction while Jay covers her microphone. Nicole’s “It’s why I’m here” can still be faintly picked up on the other mics.
Stevens: For me it has been about respect. Respect for the sport. Respect for those who conduct themselves in a manner that shows a clear understanding of what wrestling is supposed to be about.
Dusty nods along in agreement.
Stevens: I’ve been in this seat more times than I can count and I’ve felt that there has been little understanding of what I stand for, for what I believe. Professional wrestling is the greatest sport in the world and it has been taken over by clowns, lizards, con men and cowards. I was able to convince Dusty to come back and help me remind people what real wrestling looks like.
Griffith: It’s about strength in numbers... There’s a lot of them and only a few of us, but it only takes a few to turn the tide around here…
Anderson: Yeah, that stuff too. That’s also why I’m here.
Dusty ignores Nicole’s interruption.
Griffith: …more than that, I’m here with Jay and Nicole and the rest of this ‘Wrecking Crew’, because they’re not making a joke out of a sport I’ve dedicated my life to. It’s that simple.
"Jay, Dusty, final words you'd like to say? To your opponents, to your fans?"
Griffith: I’m ready to do this damn thing.
Stevens: The time for talking is over.
And with that, the trio stand and allow photos to be taken before their exit.
