From NPW’s Official Youtube Channel:
We open with a tight shot on Justin Spencer, who is seated and dressed casually in a white polo with red NPW logo on the left chest and a pair of khakis. He greets us with a welcoming smile and open arms.
Justin Spencer: Hello, wrestling fans! Thanks for tuning into NPW Today as we continue our spotlight series heading into Crowning of a Champion three! I’m on location in sunny Southern California to meet our next guest, who is a former World Champion and the current top contender to Ronnie Long’s Openweight Championship, Dusty Griffith!
The shot pulls back to reveal that Spencer is, in fact, on location at the Team Danger University in Long Beach. Next to him is the Bad Man from Boise himself, who is seated next to Spencer in a matching chair and dressed in a button up mechanics shirt and old blue jeans.
Justin Spencer: Dusty, thanks for taking the time.
Griffith reaches over and shakes Spencer’s hand, offering a polite half-smile.
Dusty Griffith: All good, brother. Let’s get to it.
Justin Spencer: Alright, let’s start with being here. You’re known to prefer working alone. How has the vibe been for you and the team since joining?
Dusty contemplates the word for a moment.
Dusty Griffith: Well, I wouldn’t say that I prefer it. I’m just set in my ways when it comes to how things should be done; here in the gym and in the ring. It’s just that people don’t like it much when my lack of tolerance starts to show.
As far as the vibe goes, I’d say it’s been solid. I’ve known Jay and Nicole since they were teens running around the Florida indies. They bring youthful energy and I bring earned experience. It’s been an interesting trade-off so far.
Justin Spencer: Speaking of which. Jay Stevens finally won his ‘big one’. Do you take credit for that success or feel that your presence has elevated him somehow?
Griffith shakes his head.
Dusty Griffith: No. Jay’s accomplishments are his own. The fact that he won the Cruiserweight Cup after my return is a coincidence. At best, I’ve been an influence on him for many years but, all of the work to get here has been his.
Justin Spencer: Yes, and now his hard work has led him towards challenging for the CWA World Championship. A title that you also want to claim one day. What were your thoughts when he called out Chris Card?
Dusty Griffith: Honestly, I was a little surprised that he had the gumption. I suppose finally winning his ‘big one’, as you called it, told him what he needed to know; and now he’s doing what all the greats do, he’s reaching for the next ‘big one’.
Justin Spencer: That he is. Okay, so what happens if he wins? Eventually your second chance at the title will come. Would you be willing to fight your own teammate for the World Championship?
Dusty looks at Spencer critically for a moment, knowing the purpose of the question.
Dusty Griffith: Absolutely. At the end of the day, my goal has always been and always will be the World Championship.
As I've said from the start. I want to lead the way in this sport once more before I’m done. So, if fighting my own brother is what needs to be done, so be it.
That said, I’ve got plenty of other fish to fry before we get there.
Justin Spencer: Indeed. Coming up you have your first chance to taste gold in Northern Pro when you challenge Ronnie Long for the Openweight Championship. What are your thoughts going into this match?
A certain spark flares in Dusty’s eye.
Dusty Griffith: I’m excited. Not just for the title shot, but for the man who carries the title; because out of everyone here, Ronnie Long is among the few that I see as a real equal to myself.
Basically, I know going in that I’ll need to be the absolute best version of myself that I can be when I climb into that ring to fight him. Which is worth all of the effort, let alone lacing up a pair of boots and getting beat up for.
Now, that’s not me saying everyone else I’ve fought up to this point hasn’t been worth the effort. It’s just that despite what society wants us to believe, not everyone is created equal; and Ronnie Long is quite a few cuts above the rest; and I intend to prove that I’m at least a few cuts above that.
Justin Spencer: It’s that simple?
Griffith nods.
Dusty Griffith: It’s that simple.
Besides, if any of this was easy, it wouldn’t be worth doing. At least to me, that is. So, yeah. Ronnie Long is a helluva challenge to test myself against and I’m looking forward to that more than anything.
Plus, he and I are a couple of aging bulls wanting to show this new world of wrestling that our way is still the best way to do it.
Which should make for a damn good fight.
So, like I said, I’m excited.
With that, the video fades and transitions back to the studio in Toronto with Justin Spencer.
Justin Spencer: And there you have it, folks! Words from the challenger. Will Dusty Griffith keep his momentum rolling when he faces Ronnie Long? There’s only one way to find out and that’s by tuning in on Sunday to watch Crowning of a Champion three!
