*We open as the sun beats down upon another crime scene. Off in some Canadian boondocks there’s been a murder. Not just any murder, but a scumbag who had just got let off on parole, a sexual offender, of course. Or at least we can assume this because squatting around the body are Lord Dominicus, Detective Theresa Beckett, and her partner, Jim.*
Beckett: A single GSW to the heart from the looks of it.
LD: So this guy has good aim then
Jim: Nah.
*He holds up a bullet with tweezers, placing it into a little ziplock bag*
Jim: With a hand-cannon like this at close range, you don’t need to be skillful to do some damage. I’m sure the bastard knew it too.
LD: Why are we even here?
Beckett: Local police called us. They got called last night after somebody heard the shot ring out over this small town- not surprising since it’s a pretty sleepy area. At first they assumed it was a normal scuffle, as happens among bored people- but then they noticed the weird coloration around the wound.
Jim: Looks like the killer tried to write something in crayon, but in haste I guess the message got garbled. This doesn’t fit our guy’s MO though, usually he puts in a little more…..effort.
Beckett: You think it’s a copycat?
LD: No, he’s pretty gentle
Jim: Huh? Anyway, this feels so abrupt, lacks the planning of his usual stuff. Almost like a crime of convenience. That said, the victim does check out as another sexual offender.
Beckett: But what’s the holiday?
LD: Google’s Birthday?
*The detectives review the corpse closely, then look up, realizing the crayon colors fit. They look at Dominicus*
LD: Sorry, Google has this little animation on its front page, what was it I was supposed to look up?
*He turns around to reveal the Google homepage on his phone while the detectives look at each other…*
Shot to the Heart
BANG!
*Darkness. A harshly lit camera peers into the black as a mechanical chug chug chug sounds, soon a target practice poster floats out of the void, a single shot marring its chest. Soon after, the NPW North American Double Crown Champion, Lord Dominicus follows it into the light. The gold of his title around his waist gleams until the lighting is adjusted enough that it doesn’t blind the camera.*
LD: There’s been a lot of questions these days. A lot of talk on the so-called “dirt sheet” websites. NPW left the XHF Network and suddenly Lord Dominicus’ contract is called into question. Will the DARK LORD OF NPW even show up to the Scotiabank Arena on October seventh?
*There’s a pause, he taps the title around his waist*
LD: You better believe I will, I am the champion, and have been for a year now in some form or another, continuously, and unrivaled. That said, the rumors are true. My contract is and always has been with the XHF Network itself, not NPW. That’s why even while most of the roster were in their own little world, I was bringing NPW’s name to the global events. That’s why I’ve been able to move from show to show with ease for the years I’ve been in the Network.
*He shrugs.*
LD: And now that NPW has left the XHF Network, and Gus is avoiding even saying that name in public, probably so as not to upset his CWA handlers, I’m not left with a lot of choices. And so October seventh, win or lose, defend or not- the triple threat with Lynx and Keith William will be my last match in NPW for the foreseeable future.
*Another pause while Dominicus looks back on things.*
LD: A year ago, Gus Arnold invested in three idiots who ruined his main event and left NPW without a champion. Meanwhile I became the NPW North American Cruiserweight Champion- the only remaining singles title at the time, and I became the foundation that the new era of NPW would grow on. Sure, there were pretenders who tried to return or con their way into my spot, but month after month- nobody ever questioned who was the REAL champion.
*He chuckles to himself*
LD: But now there’s a new snake in the garden and they’re getting exactly what they want no matter who gets hurt or trampled down on the way there. I am of course talking about Keith Williams. Congratulations Keith, you managed to slither your way into another top title shot at another company. And now?
*Dominicus throws up his arms and gestures around the nothingness, the emptiness, and the quietness*
LD: Now you stand on the precipice of your greatest victory! You’ve got your chance to be king of everything you see around you! Look at that vast hollow hole you’ve carved out for yourself, and it’s all yours- if you can beat Lynx and myself! WHAT A KINGDOM YOU’VE GOT!
*He lowers his hands*
LD: And it’s all you’ll ever have. A kingdom of air, pockets full of meaningless titles from companies that began to die the minute you made your name there. And then, like with the AWF, like with the companies that came before that, you’ll get tired of drinking your own poisoned water, and go to the next hole in the ground and talk about how you were mistreated by the higher-ups. A pattern from a man who can’t stay in one place for more than a year or two, and then drags his friends through the mud with him on the way to his next temporary fix.
*Dominicus gets closer to the camera*
LD: So enjoy it today, and tomorrow. Because NPW has good people here. Good people who right now tolerate you- don’t mistake that for respect. Sure, you’re talented, but a garbage human being is meant to be tossed in the bin. And one day you’ll cross a line, and your obsessive nature will get the better of you, and they’ll stand up and- if they’re smart, they’ll eject you into some deeper backwater where you can be king of the slugs. Good people like Lynx.
*There’s a pause as Dominicus sighs*
LD: Eron, you’ve been a fine henchman- not as evil as I would have hoped- but I’ve always respected your spirit and your heart. Eron, I’m sorry but I can’t stay, and I’m sorry but I can’t give you the one-on-one you almost certainly have earned from your months and months here.
*He’s choosing his words carefully*
LD: But let’s go out with a BANG! Let’s show those people our partnership runs deeper than some gold, that sending the right message has more weight than some…championship.
*Dominicus unhooks the title and holds it up.*
LD: You want this? Then work with me. I won’t stop you from pinning Keith- I’m on my way out after all. We can set things just a little right and maybe shine a little black light to glow up whatever NPW will become. And we can do it together.
*He pulls back the title*
LD: Now if you try to pin me, that’s a whole other story, obviously. Then I’ll have to defend this against you AND Keith, and I will do my best to end my tenure here as your Champion, as I have proudly served for the last year. I guess in the end that’s not up to me. Then again, not much seems to be anymore. See you all soon.
*Lord Dominicus throws the title over his shoulder and walks back into the darkness, with the NPW North American Double Crown’s gleam as the last thing you see before it all fades to black*
Beckett: A single GSW to the heart from the looks of it.
